Our attempts at Sustainable Living

A crucial step on a permaculture farm is managing water.

We've developed a system of swales and channels that attempt to Slow, Spread and Sink stormwater. We've also created overflow channels that lead into various collection pits - including a borewell recharge system that would replenish groundwater in the future.

Organic matter - including food waste, yard waste, cardboard boxes and cow manure are collected daily, and composted with the help of earthworms (Eisenia Fetida), and careful management of proportions. The pit is watered everyday.

Through a system of a sloped floor, and PVC valves and pipes, waste water from the pits (leachate) is collected and used as fertigation.

Compost is usually ready in 12 weeks.

We use locally sourced casuarina, eucalyptus and bamboo for truss systems and frameworks. Stabilized interlocking mud blocks for walls. Recycled pine wood for door and window frames. We also experimented with recycled plastic roofing sheets and window frames (Ricron).

We believe these practices reduce the embodied energy of our infrastructure, while blending in with the natural surroundings.

A state-of-the-art 6.2KW solar power generation unit with a 13KWh battery system has been installed on the farm. This is used for most of our electrical consumption, including laundry and some kitchen appliances.
For hot water heating, we use a solar-assisted heat pump, where the heat pump is also powered by the solar electricity. Aside from enabling the farm to run on clean, renewable energy, this ensures an uninterrupted supply of power and hot water for guests.

We designed and implemented a water treatment system based on DEWATS (De-Centralized Waste Water Treatment System) - that uses only natural processes and gravity flow.

Two parallel systems exist (gray and black water.) This water flows through a series of anaerobic tanks, and an aerobic reed garden. This system is still upcoming, and we plan to re-use the water for irrigating flowering and fruiting plants. And use the solid remains as fertilizer for flowering plants.
